Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is one of the simplest and least invasive assisted reproductive procedures available. It involves placing a carefully prepared sample of concentrated sperm directly into the uterine cavity around the time of ovulation, significantly increasing the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and improving the chances of fertilisation.
Unlike IVF, fertilisation in IUI takes place naturally inside the body. The procedure itself takes just a few minutes, requires no anaesthesia, and most women resume normal activities the same day.
"IUI brings sperm closer to the egg — reducing the journey, improving the odds, and keeping the process as natural as possible."
How IUI Works
Ovarian Monitoring
Your cycle is monitored using ultrasound and, in some cases, hormone testing to identify the optimal window for insemination. Ovulation may be stimulated with low-dose medication to produce one or two follicles.
Sperm Preparation
A semen sample is collected and processed in the laboratory. The sperm are washed and concentrated to select the most motile and healthy cells, removing seminal fluid that could cause cramping.
Insemination
Using a soft, thin catheter, the prepared sperm sample is gently introduced directly into the uterus. The process typically takes two to five minutes and causes minimal discomfort.
The Two-Week Wait
You will be advised to rest briefly and return for a pregnancy test approximately two weeks later. Progesterone support may be prescribed during this time.
Who Is IUI Recommended For?
Couples Who May Benefit from IUI
- Unexplained infertility where no specific cause has been identified
- Mild to moderate male factor infertility — reduced sperm count, motility, or morphology
- Cervical factor infertility — where cervical mucus prevents normal sperm migration
- Couples where timed intercourse alone has not been successful after 6–12 months
- Single women or same-sex couples using donor sperm
- Women with irregular ovulation who respond well to ovarian stimulation
What to Expect
Success Rates
IUI success rates per cycle typically range from 10–20%, depending on age, diagnosis, and whether ovarian stimulation is used. Multiple cycles are often recommended.
Cycle Duration
An IUI cycle follows your natural menstrual cycle, with monitoring appointments across approximately two weeks before the procedure.
Side Effects
Most women experience minimal side effects. Mild cramping during or after the procedure is common and short-lived. Ovarian stimulation medication may cause bloating.
Number of Cycles
Our clinicians typically recommend three to six IUI cycles before considering other options such as IVF, depending on your individual circumstances and response.
