Cryopreservation is the process of freezing and storing eggs, sperm, or embryos at ultra-low temperatures for future use. Modern vitrification techniques — a form of rapid-freeze cryopreservation — have transformed the field, allowing biological material to be stored for many years with minimal deterioration in quality.

At Lotus Fertility, cryopreservation forms a fundamental part of our IVF programme and is also offered as a standalone fertility preservation service for individuals who wish to protect their reproductive potential for the future.

"Cryopreservation extends the window of reproductive possibility — allowing your biological material to remain viable until the time is right for you."

What Can Be Frozen?

Eggs (Oocytes)

Mature eggs are vitrified and stored for future IVF or ICSI cycles. Egg freezing is recommended for women wishing to preserve fertility before chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or simply for social reasons.

Sperm

Sperm can be frozen for use in future IUI or IVF/ICSI cycles, or as a back-up on the day of egg collection. Men facing medical treatments that may affect fertility are strongly advised to bank sperm first.

Embryos

Surplus embryos from an IVF cycle that are not transferred can be vitrified and stored, providing additional attempts without repeating a full stimulation cycle.

Ovarian Tissue

In selected cases — particularly before childhood cancer treatment — ovarian tissue can be surgically removed and cryopreserved for future reimplantation. This is offered in specialist centres.
